For 2021-2022, there will be 0 positions available for straight Critical Care

Application Process

All applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Deadline for completed applications is August 15th of the year preceding the program start date. Appointments for the Fellowship Program will be made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). All candidates must register through the NRMP. 

Due to COVID-19 and the social distancing requirements, Interviews in 2020 for the 2021-2022 academic year will be held virtually.  Interview dates will be during the last three weeks of September and possibly the first week in October.

Step 1

The application requires the following information:

  • Official Medical School Transcripts
  • Official test transcripts for all applicable examinations (USMLE, LMCC, COMPLEX, NBOME, FMGEMS, FLEX or NBME)
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A personal statement
  • A valid ECFMG certificate (if you graduated from medical school outside of the United States)
  • A copy of your medical school diploma (if you have graduated from medical school)
  • 3 letters of recommendation are required

Step 2

Interviews will be coordinated directly by the Fellowship Program Coordinator at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Applicants considered for an interview will be contacted and invited to SUNY Upstate Medical University for an interview with the Program Director and selected faculty.  The interview day will be a half day process, including being a part of our Scientific Session conference.  Applicants will get a chance to meet with multiple faculty members as well as the current fellows.

Additional Information

  • We review approximately 220 applications a year
  • We interview approx 10 candidates for every position available
  • All candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate on or after
    July 1, 2017 will be subject to a pre-employment (post-offer) drug test.  This
    includes any prior Upstate resident/fellow who has had a break in service and is
    returning to employment.  For candidates entering residency or fellowship
    programs at Upstate, drug screening and final results must be available prior to
    the first day of their program as a prerequisite to employment.
  • Starting the 2023-2024, Upstate will sponsor H1B visa's for fellowship applicants
